You may have seen Friday night's 20/20 report on Coricidin abuse by teens and have stumbled across this site looking for more information on Dextromethorphan or 'DXM' as it is commonly called. We want to take a moment to help you in your search, and inform you of a major fact that the producers of 20/20 have overlooked.

The report explained that Coricidin contains Dextromethorphan (DXM), which is the active ingredient that gets you 'high'. While this is true, a fact that they neglected to mention was that the form of Coricidin that teens seek out specifically is Coricidin HBP Cough & Cold. This preparation contains the antihistamine Chlorpheniramine Maleate (CPM) in addition to DXM, and it is the CPM which poses the greatest health risk to your child, not the Dextromethorphan as the report would lead you to believe.

"High doses of Chlorpheniramine Maleate (CPM) can cause severe and life-threatening symptoms including seizures; shortness of breath or troubled breathing; weakness; loss of consciousness; severe dryness of mouth, nose, or throat; bleeding from skin, mouth, eyes, rectum, and vagina; and possibly death."

Here at the Dextrovese we understand these risks and take them very seriously. Therefor, we try to offer a forum in which those who choose to explore DXM may become more educated on what preparations are more suitable, what interactions to avoid, and general safety tips and harm-reduction techniques to employ for a safer experience. We do not suggest that DXM is a safe drug for recreational use, but if you are going to use it, the more educated you are of the risks the better off you will be.

DXM Information-

Dextromethorphan is a highly useful drug and is effective in treating numerous disorders. In addition to it's anti-tussive, pain management, and neuroprotective properties, DXM has been proven useful in the treatment of Parkinson's Disease, Pseudobulbar Effect, and various Cancers. Other potential uses for DXM include the treatment of Tourettes Syndrome, Heroin addiction and Alcoholism, among countless others.

Incase you didn't see the story, you can check out this shoddy piece of journalism here: Stoned on Cold Medicine

While the rest of us were so busy being pissed at the half-assed way that article was handled, Væ§ølis stepped up and posted something to try to inform the parents & kids that were mislead by the BS.
Nice work.

I tried to do something like that ...indirectly.

I agree...don't let the people above us and all those worried parents to believe that dxm fucks up the body, they should know that it's the CPM.
