I hadn't read anything about this case until the below. A man was just convicted of first degree murder, which he committed after taking between 8 and 16 Coricidin pills, along with beer and cocaine. This is I believe the second known murder where Coricidin abuse was involved.

Jury: Man, 20, guilty of murder
Nathaniel Bell is convicted of first-degree murder for stabbing a 22-year-old man in April.

A jury needed only four hours to convict Nathaniel Bell of first-degree murder Friday in a trial in which his own words turned against him.

The eight women and four men left without comment after deliberating through their lunch break. But prosecutors from the Sedgwick County district attorney's office said they expected jurors to wrestle with the tragic story of drugs and violence, involving a teenage defendant and a man killed before his 23rd birthday.

Bell faces life in prison at his sentencing Nov. 7 before Judge Terry Pullman.

"This was a tragic situation, but the jury did their job," prosecutor Michelle Carter said. "I think it was a difficult job, with the death of a young man and the task of convicting another young man of murder."

Bell was 19 when he stabbed Jose Felix-Martinez, 22, three times amid a haze of a drugs in an apartment illuminated by only a strobe light.

Defense lawyer Alice Osburn argued throughout the weeklong trial that the drugs and the strobe light hampered eyewitnesses. Bell and two other men admitted taking between eight and 16 Coricidin cold tablets, chased by beer and cocaine, in the hours before the April 24 killing.

Bell also claimed self-defense, saying Felix-Martinez was the aggressor before the stabbing.

But Bell's testimony earlier this week haunted him Friday morning during prosecutor Jennifer Hudson's powerful closing argument.

"He told you he took that knife and stabbed (Felix-Martinez) in the chest," Hudson said.

Hudson also pointed to statements Bell made to police giving a detailed account of what happened, which she said proved he wasn't too intoxicated to understand his actions. Hudson and Carter said Bell didn't claim self-defense until he sat before the jury.

Violence hadn't been a part of Bell's life until last spring. But trouble began brewing between Felix-Martinez and Bell the day before. They got in a fight. The next night, friends thought the two were being intimate on the couch inside the apartment in the 1400 block of East Wassall.

"The defendant tells you he did that for the opportunity to stab him," Hudson said.

Bell stabbed Felix-Martinez three times as he lay on the couch.

Witnesses later said Bell complained because he didn't think Felix-Martinez was appreciative of money he received from Bell. Bell also voiced jealousy because Felix-Martinez flirted with a man Bell described as his "soul mate."

"Nathaniel killed Jose because he was ungrateful, in the way," Hudson said. "Those are his words."

Not necessarily so. If you take a recreational drug and it causes you to kill somebody, you are still legally responsible.
