Two middle school students are recovering tonight after overdosing on cold medication at school.

NewsChannel 3 has learned the 12 year olds attend Desert Springs Middle School in Desert Hot Springs. School officials say that each girl took between 10 to 16 tablets of Coricidin, as well as possibly some Dramamine during lunch today.

Both became sick and were rushed to the hospital.

“Coricidin is an over the counter cold medication,” says school officer Dennis Decker. “It can affect your heart and liver and give you a high feeling.”

The school resource officer said taking over the counter cold medications for their euphoric effects is becoming somewhat of a nationwide trend.

Coricdin has some of the highest doses of Dextromethorphan, also known as DMX, among cold medicines.

12 years old? That's gotta be the youngest yet.

Someone should really go over all these articles and look at age range and geographical locations of coricidin users, could be interesting...
