Legislator pushes for cough syrup sanctions: Assemblyman Joe Samitian (D-Palo Alto) has begun pushing for a bill to place sanctions on dextromethorphan, or DXM, a drug found in cough medicine, the Times reported.

Health officials report that at least a dozen people, mostly teenagers, have died from abusing the drug in recent years.

California legislators have become alarmed enough to suggest a bill prohibiting over-the-counter sale of products containing DXM, to people under the age of 18.

The age restrictions on cigarettes and booze don't seem to prevent them from being the two most widely used drugs by teens. I don't worry too much about it.

Palo Alto has been in the news a lot lately with DXM related news. But I agree with Teck9 though. I prefer people wouldnt use DXM until they are 18 anyways.

I think 18 is an ok age for people to put whatever they wish to in their bodies.

You can't just assign an age that applies to everyone, we're all different. Not to mention the fact that if they put an age limit on dxm because of abuse, loads more young people would catch wind that they can get high off it, which would just lead to even more recreational use.

IMO, parents should stop trying to hide and protect their kids from the real world after puberty begins. Instead, they should do their best to help devellop healthy attitudes towards substances at a young age, just like sex, relationships, etc.

P.s. I <3 the koffex
