DES MOINES, Iowa -- An Iowa State basketball player was in court Friday morning on charges of fifth-degree theft.

ISU guard Michael Taylor pleaded guilty to the charges that stem from an incident last weekend at the Cub Foods store in Ames.

Taylor appeared before the judge and also asked to be sentenced.

He will have to pay a $100 fine, plus court costs for shoplifting cold medicine. The total will be about $200.

Ames police said security officers at the store watched Taylor and 20-year-old James Johnson, of Marshalltown, open a package of Coricidin cold medicine and then conceal the medication.

Before leaving the store, Taylor and Johnson bought a container of orange juice, but did not pay for the cold medication.

This is not the first time Taylor's been in trouble.

Taylor was suspended indefinitely from the team last month following an arrest for criminal mischief.

Cyclone coach Greg McDermott issued a statement revealing that this latest incident will be included in an exhaustive review of Taylor's status.

Taylor was the Cyclones top scorer this past season.

Taylor did not make any comment after the court hearing. The charge is a simple misdemeanor.

McDermott is out of state Friday.

A representative for the athletic department said the coach hopes to make a decision on Taylor's status in the very near future.
