Real drug threat is in Rx vials
Published: Thursday, March 8, 2007

The writer of the Feb. 28 letter “Stop drug flow from Mexico” says that “an overwhelming percentage of all illegal drugs come from Mexico.” This writer is either uninformed or wants the parents of these teenagers to focus on a nonexistent issue.

High-school teens today do not face the threats of drugs trafficked into the country by illegal immigrants. And just the same, people who enter the country illegally are not training and encouraging their youth to distribute drugs among the teenage high-school population. No, the biggest drug usage in teens today occurs in the abuse of substances one might find in their medicine cabinet — Xanex, morphine and DXM, to name just a few. These drugs are not brought into our country by illegal aliens. They are prescription drugs accessible to anyone who needs them.

To further the argument, prescription medicines are only truly second to the use of marijuana. This marijuana doesn't come from Mexico; in fact the stronger strains are grown here in the United States. Of course, this does not mean that drugs are not brought into this country by illegal immigrants; they certainly are. But the main drug is, of course, cocaine — and cocaine usage among the high-school teens today is lower than it has been since the 1980s.

The idea that illegal immigrants pose an imminent threat to our youth by distributing drugs to them is preposterous. The true drug threats are in our homes and drugstores.
