Reno County has been seeing "a resurgence of the abuse of Coricidin," over the counter medication for coughs and colds, by young teenagers, Sheriff Randy Henderson said today.

"The kids seem to have alot of knowledge on at least how to utilize it to make them hallucinate and zone out," Henderson said. "We saw this a couple years ago, but it is now creeping back up. We nearly lost a 13 year old last week because of a suspected overdose.

Medical authorities say overdoses typically occur in clusters, as word of the drug spreads in a community's middle schools and high schools.

Symptoms of abuse include: sweating; high body temperature; dry mouth; dry, itchy or flaky skin; blurred vision; hallucinations; delusions; nausea; stomach pain; vomiting; irregular heartbeat; high blood pressure; numbness in toes and fingers; red face; headache; loss of consciousness.
