2-20-07 - Local law enforcement officers are warning parents about a growing problem of kids using cold medicine to hallucinate. An ingredient in coricidin called DXM can cause PCP-like hallucinations.

The Reno County Sheriff's Office says more and more kids are buying it over the counter for this purpose. It's sold at most pharmacies and grocery stores as a typical cold medicine. A 13-year-old nearly died last week from a suspected overdose.

An overdose can put users at risk of serious injury or even death. A few years ago, there were concerns about students using the drug in Wichita schools.

The Reno County Sheriff is not calling this use of coricidin an epidemic, but says the use of it to get high is on the rise, and he wants parents to be aware of it.
