Dec. 18, 2005 — Carl Henon had just graduated from high school when one morning his mother, Misty Fetko, went to wake him.

"Immediately, I knew something was wrong," she said. "I called 911 and I started CPR and I was just— I was basically screaming."

Henon never woke up. He had overdosed on Robitussin cough syrup.

While kids have been drinking cough syrup to get high for years, the medical community says it has never been this popular. What's more, it is legal, cheap and easy to obtain.

Henon and his friends had been drinking Robitussin regularly to get high. Fetko had warned him about illegal drugs, but had never considered cough syrup.

"I was devastated," Fetko said. "I was angry because I felt that … I was so closely involved in his life, and I was looking for signs of drug abuse, and I didn't see them."

Some Crave DXM

The number of young people abusing and dying from cold medicine is on the rise. Some crave an ingredient in the medicine called dextromethorphan, or DXM, that causes hallucinations.

Law enforcement officials are campaigning for drug stores to start asking for identification when selling products containing DXM to young people. The drug store chain Walgreen already has started doing so.

But according to a study by the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, one of 11 U.S. teenagers has abused cough medication.

"One of the things we've learned," said Steve Pasierb, president and CEO of the Partnership for a Drug-Free America, "is what was really a fringe behavior — drinking cough medicine to get that buzz — has kind of gone mainstream, if you will, largely aided by the Internet."

Called "triple c", "doing skittles", or "robotripping," there are a number of Web sites that give young people advice on how to mix the cold medicines to get the biggest high.

James Maze used to drink up to five bottles of cough syrup a day. He said with more than a hundred over-the-counter cough medicines available, it was easy to get hooked.

"I could walk into the corner store, the corner quickie mart or whatever, and buy four bottles of Nyquil," he said. "Who's gonna say anything to me?"

U.S. poison control centers log nearly 4,000 calls related to abuse of cough medicine a year.

Be on the Lookout

But there are things a parent can do:

* * Be on the lookout for slurred speech and dilated pupils.

* * And take note of empty bottles around the house when it's not the "cold and flu" season.

Henon's mother found the empty bottles, but didn't know what it meant. Today, she struggles to keep her son's memory alive.

"I feel that other parents need to know what to look for," she said, "that it is an issue, that it is being abused."

"More citizens across all age, education and IQ levels abuse over-the-counter drugs" probably didn't sound sensational enough.

Henon never woke up. He had overdosed on Robitussin cough syrup.

I would like to know what exacly he overdosed on. Which drug was it? "dxm", or "robitussin". They don't understand the importiance of drug combinations, expecially in an OTC. Its almost (possibly) compareable to say that codene killed a man who prior, had liver disease. It would really be the high doses of tylenol in it that killed him, not the codene itself.

Eh. I would just like to know what exaclty they are reffering to. Is it max strength syrup? CCCs? robitussin cough & chest congestion? Robitussin Chest Congestion (that was a joke, chest congestion only contains guaifenesin)?

is this a true statistic? cuz what it seems to me is that they always make the number larger when they want to get something banned, and then they make the numbers smaller after its been banned to show what a good job they are doing, is it just me or does anyone else think this

Of course there is a broad generalization; with no detailed information on exactly what KIND of cough medicine he took to how much he actually consumed. This seems more like a fear-tactic to me, something to freak the parents out "OMGWTFBBQSYRUP?!" And also bringing more bad media attention to dxm and dexxers (because some kid is too stupid to buy the right syrup/gels/whatever)

Notice how they never tell the concerned parents to further educate themselves on the drug itself. Just look for those damn empty bottles and go crazy on your children.

BUT ABC NEWS KNOWS WHAT IS BEST!

These articles are so pathetic. As if newspaper editors are all clones. Someone came up with that stupid template and it's being copied ever since.

scary teen story - bogus statistics showing everything getting worse - some drug misinformation - tips on how to further alienate your kids - have a nice day

In my opinion this kid did not 'OD' on Robitussin. With all of the articles that almost prove that it can't kill you, its kinda hard to believe this one. I think if it is true, than the parents just saw the Robitussin and thought that is what killed him. He most likely took something like CCCs and just threw the litte tab away, and its a bit harder to throw away a bottle of robitussin without someone being able to find it.

I agree with you guys that it is just a scam to get shit banned. If their statistic 1 in 11 kids use cough medicine, then they should realize that how many kids do it, and DON'T die. But of course if one person dies from it, then it is a horrible thing. I would really like to see everyone in the DXM community try and fight back if they make some news story about it. How about we send them all the articles about how safe it is. But of course they won't listen because we are all drug addicts.

Cold medicine is so bad because a couple people have died from it, yet you can go out and drink as much as you want and get alcohol poisioning, and can get in a car and drive drunk and have the chance of getting into an accident? It pisses me off so much, they have tons of beer commericals, showing how great it is, then they turn around and do this shit? Double standards for the win.

Really. It's like a while back when some kid OD'd on a massive dose of fentanyl and the toxicology reports showed trace ammounts of DXM in his blood and people were like OMGCOUGHSURUP!!!1112.... sensationalism at its worse.

Hey, that's great that Walgreens cards now... too bad this wouldn't have saved this kid (As he was 18) from "ODing".... oh and the two times I've bought DXM at Walgreens, I've been able to get it, despite the policy.

I LOL'd at the part where the kid said that he would buy 5 bottles of nyquil to drink and how there were over 100 brands to do. :\

FOUR BOTTLES OF NYQUIL? WtF? Crazy ass kid.

I wonder if they are specifically talking about Dextroverse? If so that is bullshit, thats not what we are all about.

I hope none of the teens in these DxM overdosing articles are from Dextroverse. Wouldnt that be some shit?

ha ha ha...She has to "struggle to keep her sons memory alive". I'd like her to elaborate on that.

And I agree with Robo Itch, I highly doubt He OD'd because he has been doing it for years, people use the term "Over dose" rather loosely these days, dxm almost impossible to Overdose on.
