Teens Turning to Cold Pills for a High
Jody Kerzman
TAKEN IN THE PROPER DOSES -- CORICIDIN CAN RELIEVE SYMPTOMS OF THE COMMON COLD...
Deb: Used to treat nasal stuffiness, cold, itchy eyes.
BUT TAKING TOO MUCH CAN MAKE YOU FEEL EVEN WORSE...
Deb McPherson/Pharm.D.: May have difficulty walking, tired, can progress to a coma -- withdrawn, quiet.
OR, IT COULD HAVE THE OPPOSITE EFFECT -- AND MAKE YOU HYPER...MANY TEENS SAY POPPING A FEW OF THESE PILLS MAKES YOU FEEL DRUNK...IT'S A PRACTICE MANY REFER TO AS "SKITTLING"..
Officer Perry Lauer/Bismarck Police: We have kids that are abusing it and taking way above the recommended dosage...you get a type of euphoria feeling with it.
IT'S A FEELING MORE AND MORE TEENS ARE EXPERIENCING --
Perry :they take a bunch of them...one juvenile took a whole box, which is 16 to 24 tablets.
THE ATTRACTION? IT'S A CHEAP, EASY WAY TO GET HIGH -- THESE LITTLE PILLS ARE EASY TO GET..AND IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO HAVE THEM.
Perry: Easier to get than alcohol -- it's on the shelf as opposed to finding someone to buy alcohol. It's something new to try..to fit in.
ONE TEEN TOLD POLICE SHE TOOK THE PILLS BECAUSE SHE DIDN'T KNOW HOW TO TELL HER FRIEND NO. POLICE SAY THAT SHOULD BE A MESSAGE TO PARENTS -- THEY SAY PARENTS NEED TO DO MORE THAN JUST *TELL* KIDS TO SAY NO -- PARENTS MUST ALSO TEACH THEM THE SKILLS NEEDED TO SAY NO WHEN OFFERED DRUGS LIKE CORICIDIN.
