BUCYRUS -- A city councilwoman is helping lead a drive urging residents to "take time to care."
Councilwoman Norma Hill announced at Tuesday's council meeting that an informational gathering has been organized to brief parents, grandparents and other members of the community about the dangers of kids abusing over-the-counter medications.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Crawford County Fairgrounds Youth Building.
Sponsored by council's health and safety committee, Take Time to Care is free and will feature several speakers from the medical field, schools, law enforcement and drug abuse programs.
The program will feature Dr. Todd Strickland; Bucyrus City Schools Superintendent Paul Johnson; Police Chief Ken Teets; Jody Demo-Hodges of the Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Board; Brett Bedell, manager of CVS; Crawford County Sheriff's Detective John Butterworth; Jamie Hodges, Community Counseling; and Virginia Hammontree, CONTACT.
"Until the recent rash of thefts a lot of people didn't know this stuff was being stolen and abused," Hill said.
During the first weekend in May, several reports were taken from area pharmacies that bottles of Robitussin had been stolen.
Police arrested a 16-year-old boy and three other boys were detained by a local pharmacy for police.
CVS, Wal-Mart and Kroger also reported bottles missing.
Teets said the problem has been growing.
Robitussin and many other cough syrups contain dextromethorphan, which some people, mostly juveniles, abuse to get a high. Bedell said while the medication is out in the general area, some brands will be placed behind the counter at all stores because of the outbreak of thefts.
Bedell said there has been an outbreak of thefts since the affects of the dextromethorphan were publicized in the television news.
