Profiling teen drug use

5/11/2005

Alcohol, cigarettes and marijuana were the top three chemicals used by the 40 adolescents who filled out a survey on the Renaissance Campus this spring.

The survey turned up an increase in cocaine use, a drop in use of ecstasy and club drugs but a "significant increase in the abuse of ... both over-the-counter drugs (Coricidin and Robitussin) and prescription drugs (Hydrocodone and Oxycontin)," said Ellie Martinez, campus director at Renaissance.

What is most worrisome, she says, is the tendency of young people to combine drugs. "Teens are not very choosy about what chemicals they will abuse and the consequences are often serious," she said.

While some commonly cite peer pressure as the reason teens are attracted to drugs, here are the top reasons Renaissance clients who filled out the survey gave for using drugs:

Curiosity

Desire to get high

Hanging out with users

Influenced by friends

Problems in life

Desire to be cool

Negative feelings

Poor self-image

Rebellion

Desire to belong

Influenced by parents

Influenced by siblings

"Curiosity" is on the list - because the kids themselves suggested it. "They don't have a deep sense of the danger drugs pose... they don't have that fear," Martinez said. She would like to see schools start a curriculum as early as kindergarten and extending right through college to emphasize healthy living, "how to be an effective individual without using artificial means to do it," she said. Kids drink or use drugs "to fill a void, (they have) a hunger to feel better. The bottom line for anybody is to change how they feel."

Translation: They are not indoctrinated and scaremongered enough, we have to ramp up the propaganda.

"You see, I think drugs have done some good things for us. I really do. And If you don't believe drugs have done good things for us, do me a favour. Go home tonight take all your albums, all your tapes and all your CDs and burn them. 'Cause You know what the musicians that made all that great music that's enhanced your lives throughout the years? RrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrEAL flippin high on drugs... The Beatles were so flippin high they let Ringo sing a few songs."

"They lie about marijuana. Tell you pot-smoking makes you unmotivated. Lie! When you're high, you can do everything you normally do, just as well. You just realize that it's not worth the flippin effort. There is a difference."

"Why is pot against the law? It wouldn't be because anyone can grow it, and therefore you can't make a profit off it, would it?"

"Here is my final point. About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I flip, what I take into my body - as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet?"

Yep, I was thinking this as well. People are afraid of us feeding them drugs, then take the drugs the government shoves down our throat without question. It's pretty sickening.

40 kids is two classrooms assuming each classroom would have 20 kids, which is a relatively low number (imagine 4 rows of 5 people).

now i bet these 40 were taken out of a giant schoolwide test to achieve the "results" the surveyors wanted. manipulation of the statistics by lowering the denominator of the tested.

"how to be an effective individual without using artificial means to do it,"

you mean without adderall concerta and ritilin? medications? without ssris and maois? minus amiben? minus prozac? minus the fucking entertainment that releases endorphins and procrastinate life that everyone indulges themselves in. Life is so artificial already..... I see nothing wrong with pure uninhibited drugs.

Something I've noticed at work is that people talk negatively about 'drugs' (i.e. pot, meth, heroin), but then they turn around and talk about the 'medicine' their doctor gives them and their kids, (i.e. adderall, vicodin, xanax) and how great it makes them feel and how it makes their kids behave.

First off, to put it plainly...this bitch is really ignorant.

"how to be an effective individual without using artificial means to do it"

Nobody has, or will ever have the answer to this problem, dumb stupid ass...this basically is the endless search for the meaning of life, not only that, it's totally relative to individual perspective on what the hell 'effective' and 'artificial' mean. WHAT A STUPID ASS!!!!!!

Did this bullshit really go past editors who went to college? Wait...let me rephrase that...who graduated high school, or have not suffered a significant amount of brain damage, particularly in the area that deals with common sense and reason?

I love articles like this, because it shows us just how ignorant and stupid some people can really be...all of this from a survey of 40 people?

My goodness...I don't even know how to respond to this properly, how much of this bullshit is the media going to vomit out before someone gives these idiots a slap in the face and says 'move on retards, nothing to see here, find something else to whine about'

Sorry for teh rage, but this is getting more absurd by the minute...

This is pretty funny. I've noticed that too. It's so fucking disgusting the mind games the anti-drug idiots play. They bash marijuana, psychedelics, and even drugs like meth and heroin to hell, all the while giving meth to kids and giving vicodin as well as many other opiates to other people. They then wonder why kids seem to think prescription drugs are "safe" (although I think quite the opposite). This drug war is running itself in a circle.
