Skittling Putting Teens In Danger
Some Teens Taking High Doses Of Coricidin

POSTED: 6:31 pm EST March 22, 2005
UPDATED: 6:47 pm EST March 22, 2005

For some teens, over-the-counter Coricidin cold tablets offer a cheap and easy high.

Teens call it "skittling" because the pills look like Skittles candy.

When taken in massive doses, the active ingredient in Coriciden -- dextramethorphan -- can prove deadly. Doctors say the number of reported cases is just the tip of the iceberg.

"Since 2001, the number of calls involving suspected abuse of Coricidin has increased by about 55 percent," said Dr. Christina Hantsch, medical director of the Illinois Poison Center.

Substance abuse specialists say the number of 13 to 19 year olds abusing cold medicines is definitely on the rise.

It's just a filler. :shake:

No, they don't. The media does because they just copy each other.

Sounds so professional with the misspelled words "dextramethorphan" and "Coriciden". I think they should get off people's cases for drug use and start instilling better grammar on America.

I just checked this in Google. The overwhelming number of hits for "Skittles" and "Skittling" used to refer to Coricidin were indeed by news sites. If kids were commonly using these terms, I would expect many more incidental references in posts on various message boards and such. I really do suspect that it is more the media than abusers using these terms.

They probably use it to make it seem as if the kids think they are harmless because of the child-like term "Skittles". Everyone loves skittles, right?
