Two Cape Coral teenagers are dead and another remains hospitalized after police say they overdosed Sunday on "Triple C."

Alex Kulwicki, 19, and two friends, both also 19, returned to his 102 Southeast 46th Terrace home sometime overnight.

When his family awoke around 9:40 a.m., relatives found Kulwicki passed out on a living room couch. The other men, whose names were not released as of noon today, were found on a bed in the back room not breathing, Cape Coral police said. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

Kulwicki went to Cape Coral Hospital Sunday, where he was initially listed in critical condition. By 11 a.m. Monday, he had been upgraded to good condition, said hospital spokeswoman Karen Krieger.

A man who answered the phone at Kulwicki's home Sunday evening said the family declined comment.

Triple C, the slang term for the over-the-counter medication Coricidin HBP Cough & Cold, contains dextromethorphan, commonly called DXM. Other slang terms for the drug include dex, candy, skittles and red devils.

While it is legitimately used to treat colds or allergy symptoms, when taken in high doses the drug can cause hallucinations and a sense of dissociation. Effects can last as long as six hours.

In high doses, the drug can cause increased body temperatures, irregular heart beat, high blood pressure, loss of consciousness, seizure, brain damage and death. Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, headache and numbness of fingers and toes are other effects.

The drug usually is taken orally, which is how the Cape teens took the powdered form of the drug, police Sgt. Phil McDonald said.

Investigators believe the men bought the drug over the Internet. How much they took and specifically where they bought it remains under investigation, police said.

Cape police have seen teen use of Triple C in the past, McDonald said.

"You get a lot of kids shoplifting it," he said.

Neither Kulwicki nor his friends had previous run-ins with police for drugs or any other problems, McDonald said.

Police expect to release the name of the other men as soon as they notify next of kin.

Idiots.

We need to hack into the TV stations and the radio and send out major broadcasts saying "CCCs WILL KILL YOU". If these guys had just read the FAQ or been on the dextroverse or rfgdxm's page they wouldn't be dead right now. Well, not of CCC overdose anyway.

Friend claims teens overdosed on DXM
WBBH-TV

LEE COUNTY— Dustin Waits knew all three teens involved in Sunday morning's alleged drug overdose. He says he tested out the exact batch of drugs believed to have killed Chris Hundley and Steve Wambolt and put Alex Kulwicki in the hospital.

Nineteen year old Dustin Waits claims he was with Alex Kulwicki and friends last Friday night when the package arrived.

"It was a regular yellow envelope, with a Ziploc bag of 25 g of DXM," said Waits.

DXM is dextromethorphan, a powerful drug with psychedelic effects at high doses. It's found in cold medicines like Coricidin.

Waits says the powder form of DXM was purchased off of a website called *edit* and was mailed to Kulwicki's friend Torin Lother in Fort Myers so no one's parents would find it.

When it arrived several of the men tried it.

"I had not done DXM in a while, and it made us all sick," said Waits.

According to police, sometime early Sunday morning, Alex Kulwicki, Chris Hundley and Steve Wambolt overdosed on a drug bought off the internet. Two of those teens died. Police will not say what drug they allegedly used.

Waits was not there that night, but says the three men took DXM. Hundley and Wambolt died and Kulwicki ended up in the hospital.

"We're used to them sitting out on the porch and now there's just three empty chairs," said Waits.

Looking at pictures, poems and music Wambolt made, Lother was unable to speak on camera. He has spoken with detectives.

Waits has been scared straight from using DXM and hopes parents take a closer look into what their kids are doing.

"You never think you could die, until it happens," said Waits.

Wambolt was into music and often wrote guitar riffs. Friends don’t have many pictures of Hundley because he was always the one taking the pictures.

The website where the teens allegedly purchased the drug warns, "This is not a finished pharmaceutical product, but an active ingredient. These products are not intended for human consumption."

Waits and Lother say the teens were aware of the dangers of DXM, but believes they just used too much.

The further away from the source the sketchier information is.

THANK YOU drdªv€. I so far haven't been able to find that WBBH-TV news report using Google Groups. I consider that report to be sufficiently credible that I have added it to my website. The main open issue I see is confirming with the coroner they took DXM, and whether any other drugs were involved. Anyone know the phone number of the Lee County, Florida coroner's office? FWIW odds are it'll take at least a few weeks for the full tox results to come in.

And, if anyone knows this specific supplier, please privately tell me. I was unable to find it with a Google search. (And NO I am not looking to buy DXM. My interest is journalistic.)

Yep, the phone number for the Medical Examiner is listed. If there was a physical autopsy, and the coroner just didn't quickly chalk it up as a drug OD death and release the bodies, that would have already been done. I'll call tomorrow and see what I can get. And if I can get the full tox results when they come in. (In some states this is not public record. However, given that I am obviously a journalist with an interest in DXM deaths, even if it isn't public record I may be able to obtain it.)

As for the supplier, I see that drdªv€ edited that out of the WBBH news report posted here. Given that this is actual news, I would think this is an exception to the rule against posting suppliers here. I don't list suppliers on my site. However, I did include the mention of the specific supplier when I added that news report to my website. It'll be interesting to see if this supplier stays around.

I sent the supplier in PM tp you, we have so many "kids" under 18 here that I didn't think it wise to tempt them with a known supplier with legal probs.

Here's an embarrassing early news report:

http://www.nbc-2.com/articles/readarticle....eid=2646&z=3&p= (http://www.nbc-2.com/articles/readarticle.asp?articleid=2646&z=3&p=)

All about the deadly "Triple C" which they thought had killed these 2 teenagers.

From looking at my website logs, these news reports must have raised interest about DXM in Florida. Both my sites are getting substantially more hits than average. My guess is they are coming from Floridians.

UPDATE:

I have contacted the Medical Examiner's office in this case. The toxicology reports are pending, and the results aren't expected to come in until after around 10-14 weeks from today. YES, I do mean weeks. This sort of delay for tox results isn't unusual. Particularly as from the news reports the police have chalked this up as a recreational drug OD case, and foul play isn't expected, no need to put a rush on it.

However, given the previous news reports, it seems almost certain that DXM was involved. Likely the only open issue is whether or not other drugs were taken. It is always possible that they thought it would be a neat idea to try some Oxycontin with DXM and...

I plan on snail mailing a request for the reports. I was told the request would be attached to the file, and they'd send me a copy whenever a final cause of death is determined. Although unless other drugs were involved, I doubt many are interested in details like plasma and liver levels of DXM and DXO other than me. My guess is that they took some sort of obscene dose.

Yeah really. I wish everyone would quit pointing their fingers at DXM just because it's the actual chemical responsible for the trip.

My guess is what happened is some early reporters (or the police) got confused and thought Coricidin was involved. However, later reports cite witnesses claiming that a 25 gram bag of DXM powder from a certain chemical supplier was the source. Almost surely it was DXM powder. It is possible someone got confused and thought "Triple C" was slang for any form of DXM, and not a specific brand of Coricidin. The way to know for sure is wait for the tox results.

anybody notice how many different varieties of coricidin are included in the video??? including coricidin "d"?? <--- DOESNT EVEN CONTAIN DEXTROMETHORPHAN!!!

Horray for good reporting!!!
