Unfortunately, the source here is just a friend that states he
"apparently died after taking dextromethorphan". And, there isn't enough
details here like place of death that I can contact the coroner. A Google
search on his name comes up with squat about his death.

Memorial will honor pet lover

YUCAIPA: Boy Scouts are seeking donations to build a dog park to recognize
Erick Myrman.

01:04 AM PDT on Sunday, August 29, 2004

By KARIN MARRIOTT / The Press-Enterprise

YUCAIPA - Two Boy Scout troops plan to build a dog park at the Yucaipa
Animal Placement Society that will memorialize a Yucaipa High School
graduate and his love of animals while raising awareness of drug abuse.

A member from Boy Scout Troop 16 and two from Troop 9 will seek donations to
build the Erick Myrman Memorial Park for their Eagle Scout projects, said
shelter Director Sherri Stanton.

Myrman, 20, an animal lover who owned several dogs, cats and other pets,
died on Feb. 14, family friend Brian Boyd said in a phone interview. Myrman
apparently died after taking dextromethorphan, or DXM, a drug common in
over-the-counter cough and cold remedies, Boyd said.

Dextromethorphan has become popular among youths who prefer to take it
recreationally. Boyd, a probation officer, said he has seen an increase in
the abuse of the drug.

"I think mainly because of his love for animals, we would like to promote
the care and welfare of the animals in there (at the shelter) and then maybe
bring some ... insight on the substances involved and what happened," Boyd
said.

Stanton said the park will be about 20,000 square-feet. It will be fenced
and have grass, landscaping, tables and chairs. It will also have a wall
with a plaque bearing Myrman's name. The wall will also have room for
plaques recognizing donors to the project and the shelter, she said.

The park will allow people adopting a dog to socialize with the animal in an
open area.

By also using the park to raise awareness of drug abuse, it will help one of
the shelter's programs aimed at turning troubled teens around, Stanton said.

"It's another tool for us to teach from and it's a very important message
for us to get across," she said.

Why is the worthless? Odds are good if this family friend is going around saying it was DXM, then that's what killed him. Note that I by NO means am claiming this is 100% for sure a DXM death. At best this is just someone claiming another died of DXM. My hope is to somehow be able to confirm this with a coroner. So far I can't find any other mention of his death in a newspaper report. And his name is very unusual, and thus easy to search for.

The parts that get me are "abuse of this drug" and "troubled teens".

I do not abuse this drug, I use it as a teaching tool.

I am not a troubled teen, I am just tired of not knowing what life really has to offer behind the scenes.

I saw this and didn't post it because it seemed to be unsubstantiated finger pointing by someone with a chip on their shoulder. B)

I started designing in 6th grade, I have no idea why, but now I am glad I did because it's one of my favorite things to do. On February 14th, my brother died. He died of a brain hemmorhage: from drinking and using this thing called dxm.

This is from a profile by his sister, I couldn't find any other articles related to him.

Exactly how did you find that? For those curious the URL is:

A quick check of the whois confirms that this is his sister. I find the reference to a brain hemorrhage odd. Unlikely that DXM would kill someone this way unless they fell down while high and their head hit the ground. I also wonder if possibly correlation is being confused with causation. Like he was known to use DXM, ended up dead from drugs, and it was just assumed DXM was involved. I notice that she writes that he was also drinking, so other drugs are involved here.

Okay, alot of people will probubly not beleive me but I am currently living in Yucaipa California.

In fact I graduated from Yucaipa Highschool the same year that Erik did, however I have never even met him.

=Even worst is that im finishing up my community service hours for petty theft at YAPS (Yucaipa Animal Placement Society).

I can always ask and see whats happening, me and ONE other person here are the only two people I know that dex and im the only one of us that STILL dexes to this day. I just bought some DXM from Savon's on Yucaipa Blvd. (900mg robogels).

Im staying here for awhile while im taking classes then ill get a new apartment in rowland heights or diamond bar, until then im stuck here so I might be able to get some info. But I watch for this kidna news and have never heard of it before :eh:

What county is Yucaipa in? Easiest way to find out if it is bullshit is to contact the coroner and ask what the cause of death is, and get a copy of the autopsy report. I'm not sure if the law in California makes autopsy reports public record. However, even if not as a journalist with an obvious interest in DXM deaths that should be enough for me to be able to get it. As you live in Yucaipa, finding out may be as simple as calling the coroner's office and asking what the listed cause of death is. And if dextromethorphan was found in his system.

Ill call before 6 tonight. I have gotten post morten and autopsy reports before and it always depends on family consent as far as my past experiences are concerned. It will prob take about 3 days to get it, a bit of a slow process. Unless I can talk the coroner into letting me in on the specifics.

I did ask a couple people, such as the director of YAPS (Yucaipa Animal Placment Society, she is in charge of donation management) and Mike (the guy I work with, he would know about ANY planned construction) and they havnt heard anything about this. Its total news to them. Also, I asked my friend if the death was announced at school and he said no. Wich is strange because ALL adolescent deaths are pretty much announced in this city. When this kid Jerel Williams was shot in the back with a 12 gauge, they announced it the day after.

Also no one I know has even heard of this guy. I should probubly ask the school directly about him, but knowing them they wont tell me anything.

So far, theres no proof that this even happened, except for that article and a far from sad sidenote in some girl's profile.

Ill look further into this and keep you guys updated.

BTW Yucaipa is in San Bernardino County.

Wich is close to Los Angeles county for those whom are unaware. Yucaipa is also neighbor to Redlands and about 30 min from Riverside and Fontana. Also it hosts Oak Glenn and Calimesa and is aout 15 min from Colton city.

This might help ya out when trying to locate the area.

Check the main DXM forum here for the new post I made about this case that the mods haven't moved to the News forum yet. I already figured out this was San Bernardino County, and made a phone call to the coroner's office there. They confirmed the death. It is in fact a DXM + diphenhydramine (Benadryl) + alcohol death. I had no trouble getting the information at all. The deputy coroner even told me over the phone the blood and liver levels of DXM and diphenydramine, and his BAC. I'm just waiting now for them to snail mail me the coroner's report. Apparently they have a lot of different such requests to process, although he did say in my case he'd try and put a wiggle in my request as I am a reporter.

If I got the figures right about the DXM levels, comparing those with other known DXM death cases just the amount of DXM he took could have been sufficient to do him in. The diphenydramine levels also look quite high, but I'll need to look up what normal levels are. (Of course, both DXM and DPH are 2D6 substrates, and thus dangerously interact at high doses.) That .15% blood alcohol level also certainly didn't help his chances either.

I have obtained the coroner's report. There was NO brain hemorrhage found.

The funny thing about this article to me is that its mostly about boy scouts doing their eagle project and not to much mention about the dead guy. Another funny thing is that these eagle scouts are trying to raise drug awareness. I, an eagle scout my self, promote safe drug use for the right people :sly:
